POLITICAL POINT OF VIEW

President Continues His Negro World Tour

Contributing Correspondent: CDW
As Barack Obama, the first black President of the United States, continues on his Negro World Tour, it was only obvious that he would travel to one of his two homelands - the US being the other.
Last Tuesday, the native son of Kenya, Africa, hung out with his peeps to share some love and also address a few serious concerns with the progress of the Motherland and its challenges to be great. Barack was embraced and welcomed by all of Kenya. They held their big customary ceremony allocated for dignitaries, but of course, Barack's prestige as a head of state was much more special than any other foreign statesmen's visit to date.
He's one of them. He looks like them. He sounds like them. And he understands Africa better then past leaders who've traveled there - not to befriend or share sympathy, but to only abstract resources and make demands of this progressive, struggling country.
Past visitors have always infiltrated Africa with the notion of telling this rich and affirmed people what they should be doing or else. Barack came to share compassion. Yes, he spent time examining the conditions and unwanted mistreatments of women and children. But again, his reprimand was from a place of dignity and admiration for a country that is so very cultural with tremendous, untapped resources.

President Obama wanted to give them encouragement. He expressed that as the world opens up to this new-found talent pool, be sure to control the destiny and dignity of this country - far past when he's out of the oval office. Barack knows how the forces of America and other nations have always robbed and looted foreign lands for their own personal and professional greed.
During Saturday's dinner, Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, described Obama as a president of historic consequence; an "engine to propel and transform the African continent." Obama joked that some of his critics probably believe he went back to Kenya "to look for my birth certificate," adding, "That is not the case." The trip to Africa was in part a homecoming for Obama.
He dined with members of his extended family. A dinner was hosted by Kenyatta at the State House, which followed a series of meetings to promote increased investment in agriculture, infrastructure and energy production. "I’m proud to return as the first U.S. President to ever visit Kenya while still in office," Obama said at a joint news conference with Kenyatta earlier in the day.
It was visibly obvious that Obama enjoyed his visit to Kenya, immensely, before heading for Ababa, Ethiopia. For this, I give my president a standing ovation and two fist pumps for acting like a real Presidential Negro.

SPECIAL EDITION

Most parents/grandparents/caregivers
are just too overwhelmed
to give special attention
to children in need.

This is one of the reasons why
children are caught in uncompromising situations
like gangs, teen pregnancy and drive bys.

The Link & Option Center
is one of Chicago's top organizations
that has taken matters into its own hands
and doing something about it.

TLOC has been doing so for 20 years!
This is where you come into play.
If you can't afford to donate your time,
then donate your resources.

Support the family.
Support children who will continue to have
a place to go when school is out
that is safe, productive and has their well being
in mind.

We at HLN have seen the quality of work this organization
continues to do and ask that you

save the date!

Put your money where your mouth is!
Join the festivities taking place

IFP/Chicago Member Profile: Mike Houlihan, Irish American Movie Hooley
Mike Houlihan

Mike Houlihan of the Irish American Movie Hooley

How long have you been a member?
I have been an IFP member, on and off, since 2005.

Why did you join IFP?
I joined IFP to connect with not only the Chicago filmmaking community but to avail myself of the many resources IFP makes available to members.

What does it mean to you to be a filmmaker in Chicago? How does Chicago inform/influence your work?
Chicago plays a role in every film I make, all of them have been shot in Chicago, beginning with my first feature, Tapioca, which we shot on the streets of Chicago in 2006. I'm a very proud Irishman from the Southside of Chicago and I was shaped by the neighborhood I grew up in, my Southside pals from high school and my ever expanding family of friends and artists here in Chicago. Other than the dozen years I spent in New York City acting from 1973-85, my entire career has been here in the great city of Chicago.

What projects are you currently working on?
I'm currently working on The First Annual Irish American Movie Hooley, a film festival I have founded with my company, Hibernian Transmedia NFP and the Gene Siskel Film Center. I encourage all IFP members to submit their Irish American films for potential premiere with our festival in September. More information on the Hooley festival is available at http://hiberniantransmedia.org/movie-hooley/. Send me your movies!

Hibernian Transmedia also produces a couple of Irish American radio shows each week in Chicago, The Skinny & Houli Show on WCEV 1450AM and The Houli's Hooley on WSBC 1240AM, broadcasting every Saturday and also available by podcast. I continue to co-host The Skinny & Houli Show every week on WCEV 1450AM every Saturday from 3-4PM and podcast at http://skinnyhouli.com.

I also have a few film projects in development through Hibernian Transmedia. I'm working on a book right now about my work with the Chuy Garcia Campaign for Mayor last winter, which introduced me to a multitude of Chicago political characters. I hope to have the book, "Get the Money, My 82 Days on the Campaign Trail in Chicago," out by the end of this year. I've been a columnist for the Irish American News since 1996 and continue to write my column, Hooliganism every month in that paper and online at www.mikehoulihan.com.

What was the last movie you saw?
The last movie I saw was "One for the Ditch," a very funny documentary by Paddy Hayes about irrepressible Irishman Mike Malloy, who survived over twenty attempts on his life in depression-era New York. He's the Rasputin of the Bronx. One for the Ditch is under consideration to premiere in Chicago this September at the First Annual Irish American Movie Hooley.

Call for entries for the Irish American Movie Hooley are open until July 31.
