My nephew needs your help to get to Barcelona, Spain. Please read the note from their parents and give them a call to assist financially.

May this message find everyone in the best of health and spirit.

As the blessed and proud parents of 2 wonderfully gifted, and high achieving children, Ahmad and Maisa, we wanted to share some exciting news with you! Both of our children began their stellar academic careers at Muhammad University of Islam from Pre-School throughout their 8th grade years. 

Our son, Ahmad, is currently a junior at Providence St. Mel School in Chicago. This year his schedule was packed, and included an English Honors class, an AP Chemistry course, and an AP History course.  He has maintained Honor Roll status all 3 quarters and we look forward to another A Honor Roll certificate this last quarter.  He is 15 years old, and at the age of 14 last September, took the ACT for the first time, and scored a 28.  He has not applied to any colleges yet, but because of his scores we have so many letters from various (prestigious) colleges and universities inviting him to attend their college. It's amazing!  He recently took the ACT again 2 weeks ago, and scored a 29!   

Ahmad wants to be a marine biologist, and has been given the opportunity of a lifetime through his school to travel to Barcelona, Spain this summer.  He will be there for one month studying abroad.  They have a great program which will help to secure and enhance his college goals.  We are asking friends and family for their support in helping us to make this trip a reality.

We have attached Ahmad's essay, his acceptance letter (below), his transcript, and the invoice for tuition to this amazing Oxbridge Academic Summer Program (www.oxbridgeprograms.com- La Academia de Barcelona.  The tuition for this program is normally $7,900.00, but due to scholarships from his school and the program itself, it has been lowered tremendously.  

The total cost for this amazing trip is $5,200.00.  This will include $1700 for the airfare, $2900 for the tuition, and $600 spending money (which includes lunch for 30 days which is not included in the program).

Although our pride almost got in the way of reaching out and asking for help-we ultimately cannot allow our son to miss this awesome opportunity without trying all paths to meet the goal.  If you are interested and able to help us get Ahmad to Spain please reply to this email or call us at our numbers listed below.  Because we know that the internet is not the safest place for sensitive money matters, per the phone call we will give you the information needed to assist.  

We understand that times are difficult for some, and don't want you to feel pressured to give what you don't have nor what you are not comfortable to give; but if you are able to assist us in any way with any amount in this huge endeavor, we would be ever so grateful.  We hope to hear from you soon.

Use Resume Builder and Hear the Words "You're Hired"

Helps Workers Uncomfortable with Computers, Internet  
CHICAGO - A new tool on Illinois' help wanted job board targets workers who previously did not need a resume to get hired and those who lack confidence with their computer and internet skills, the Illinois Department of Employment Security said today.
The Resume Builder on Illinoisjoblink.com features an intuitive self-service approach. Step-by-step, Resume Builder creates a resume designed to pass through computer filters employers use to sort job applicants. Resume Builder also takes the user's information and, using that same word-search technology employers use, identifies job openings that match the worker's skills.  
 
"Resume Builder is a field guide for workers who did not rely upon a resume to get hired," IDES Director Jay Rowell said. "This tool walks workers through the resume building process. It does so in a way that respects their decades of work success and finishes with a product that will be noticed by hiring managers who grew up with internet technology."  
 
"Building a resume can present a communication issue, not a skills issue," Rowell said. 
 
The new tool also is suitable for high school and college graduates.  
 
Resume Builder is available at Illinoisjoblink.com, the state's hiring board managed by IDES. The website features more than 150,000 help-wanted ads and 60,000 resumes. Illinoisjoblink.com is free for workers and employers. It compares favorably to private efforts that cost hundreds of dollars. No-cost HR recruitment services for employers and workers are available at the website and at (877) 342-7533. 
 
Individuals who apply for unemployment insurance automatically are registered in Illinoisjoblink.com. Once registered, workers can then select My Homepage to access My Resume. Individuals who have not applied for benefits can create an account and follow the same steps through My Homepage and My Resume. 
 
State agencies are working together to deliver services to unemployed Illinois workers. Access to services for basic needs and job training are located atwww.ides.illinois.gov/assistance.

WASHINGTON, DC - On Tuesday, February 26th, the White House will honor ten leaders who have devoted their time and efforts to helping further education among African Americans. These individuals have provided exemplary leadership in the area of education in the African American community at the local, state or regional level. 

"President Obama has made providing a complete and competitive education for all Americans - from cradle to career - a top priority," said Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett.  That's why, last summer, he signed an executive order to establish the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans. This week, we look forward to welcoming Champions of Change who have been working to ensure that all African American students receive an education that fully prepares them for high school graduation, college completion, and productive careers."

The Champions of Change program was created as a part of President Obama's Winning the Future initiative.  Each week, the White House features a group of Americans - individuals, businesses and organizations - who are doing extraordinary things to empower and inspire members of their communities. 

An announcement will also be made at the event by Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan about the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans. This initiative was established by an Executive Order signed by President Obama in 2012. The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans will work across Federal agencies and with partners and communities nationwide to produce a more effective continuum of education programs for African American students.  The Initiative aims to ensure that all African American students receive an education that fully prepares them for high school graduation, college completion, and productive careers.

Phillip Jackson and The Black Star Project - Chicago, IL

Phillip Jackson was born into and resided in public housing in Chicago.  Mr. Jackson attended eleven Chicago public schools with varying levels of success.  He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors with a degree in Philosophy and studied education at National College of Education.  In his career, he has served as senior vice president of operations for a large retail book chain; assistant budget director for the City of Chicago; chief of staff for Chicago Public Schools; chief executive officer for the Chicago Housing Authority; chief for education for the City of Chicago; and president and chief executive officer for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago.  He is founder and executive director of The Black Star Project, which works to create globally competitive, globally compassionate, globally cooperative students, parents, families, and communities.

Study Finds African Americans See Barriers to Philanthropic Leadership

Despite an increased commitment to diversity within the philanthropic sector, a majority of African Americans do not believe they have real opportunities for meaningful leadership roles within the sector, a report from the Association of Black Foundation Executives finds.
  
The report, The Exit Interview: Perceptions on Why Black Professionals Leave Grantmaking Institutions, found that in 2012 only 3 percent of chief executives and 7 percent of trustees at philanthropic organizations in the U.S. were African American, while the percentage of African-American professional staff and program officers had declined slightly from 10 percent and 17 percent  in 2010 to 9 percent and 16 percent in 2012. 
  
When asked why African-American philanthropic professionals leave grantmaking work, 41 percent of respondents said their role within grantmaking institutions did not allow them to work directly with communities, 65 percent said they found professional growth opportunities elsewhere, and 22 percent said they were pushed out
  
"Retention strategies are much more about changing the culture of philanthropy as well as providing diverse leaders with the 'armor' and protective factors they need to survive in foundation environments," said ABFE president Susan Taylor Batten, "particularly if they are leaders on issues of racial and social justice."
