It read: "My children know who Shakespeare is, and they can recite passages. Come visit us any time." -- Signed: Marva Collins. Smith got the nod from his editor and headed to Garfield Park, where, tucked into the second floor of a row house, Mrs. Collins ran a school that was accomplishing things that were hard to believe. "There were little four-year olds reading better than a lot of high school sophomores. All these little grade school kids," Smith recalled. Smith wrote about what he saw: a woman who - frustrated with Chicago Public Schools - left in order to teach her back-to-basics brand and was working wonders with children from the inner city. Within months, Mrs. Collins was featured on "60 Minutes." As her story grew, so did donations to her cause. Enough for Mrs. Collins to build a school, Westside Prep, in Garfield Park. The singer Prince visited Mrs. Collins, told her he wished he'd attended a school like hers, and gave her $500,000. Educators from around country came to Chicago to learn her stripped down, back-to-basics teaching methods that challenged black inner city youths with advanced curriculum. President Ronald Reagan asked if she would be his secretary of education. She turned him down. A made-for-television movie about her life starred Cicely Tyson and Morgan Freeman. Mrs. Collins died Wednesday in South Carolina where she was in hospice care. She was 78.  Mrs. Collins is also survived by her son, Patrick, and four grandchildren - one of whom graduated in 2011 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She also had a daughter, Cynthia, who died in 2008. The Next Generation of African American Male Educators, specifically Professors (NGAAME-P) Summer Project is a two-week program for African American male high school students who want to earn a PhD in education and teach another generation of educators.  For inspiration, N-GAAME-P was launched with a dedication to Benjamin Elijah Mays, a Morehouse College president who once taught Martin Luther King, Jr. Fifteen selected students will participate in digital filmmaking, scholarly reading, writing and discussion under the guidance of top education scholars from around the country, including: Tyrone Howard, professor of education, faculty director of Center X, and director of the Black Male Institute, University of California at Los Angeles; Marvin Lynn, dean of the School of Education, Indiana University-South Bend; Terrell Strayhorn, professor of educational studies and director of the Center for Higher Education Enterprise, Ohio State University. "This project is designed to reimagine the field of education and spark the imaginations of African American males who want to become education professors," said Marcus Croom, PhD Literacy, Language and Culture student and an organizer of NGAAME-P. "Each young man selected for this project will complete NGAAME-P tasks designed to help him voice, 'I got next' as a future education scholar. They'll have an inside look at our doctoral program and begin developing their own scholarly agenda." Students who complete NGAAME-P will receive assistance with applications to UIC undergraduate programs in education and the UIC Honors College. Scholarship opportunities may be available. "Intentionality is critical for preparing the next generation of African American male education scholars," said Alfred Tatum, PhD, Dean of the College. "I am optimistic that if we do this well the impact will be far-reaching. I am also pleased that one of our doctoral students in the College of Education is leading this effort." The NGAAME-P Summer Project will take place July 20-31, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the UIC Reading Clinic in UIC's Education, Theatre, Music and Social Work Bldg., 1040 W. Harrison St. The application deadline is July 15. High school students at any level may apply, but juniors and seniors are preferred. Applications are currently being accepted. Try these strategies to help your reader improve her reading during the summer and beyond: Six books to summer success: Research shows that reading just six books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing. When choosing the six, be sure that they are just right - not too hard and not too easy. Take advantage of your local library. Ask for help selecting books that match your child's age, interests, and abilities. Libraries often run summer reading programs that motivate kids to read, so find out what's available in your area. Also check our book lists for recommendations. Read something every day: Encourage your child to take advantage of every opportunity to read. Find them throughout the day: Morning: The newspaper - even if it is just the comics or today's weather. Daytime: Schedules, TV guides, magazines, online resources, etc. For example, if your daughter likes the food channel, help her look for a recipe on the network's Web site - then cook it together for more reading practice. Evening: End the day by having your child read to you from the book he is currently reading (one of the six books, above). Have him rehearse a paragraph, page, or chapter before reading to you. Rereading will help him be more fluent - able to read at an appropriate speed, correctly, and with nice expression. Keep reading aloud: Reading aloud benefits all children and teens, especially those who struggle. One benefit is that you can read books your child can't, so she will build listening comprehension skills with grade-level and above books. This will increase her knowledge and expand her experience with text, so that she will do better when she reads on her own. Willie Wilson For President

Yesterday I attended the historic announcement of Dr. Willie Wilson's decision to run for president of the United States. It was covered by global media, but what surprised me most was not seeing all of Chicago's black media outlets or political editors. I even called around to a few media entities asking where are their people? Why are they not here covering this monumental introduction into an already crowded field of potential Republican and Democratic contenders?

I also was shocked... but not surprised to see none of the elite black business, spiritual or community leaders who recently lined up behind Mayor candidate Rahm Emanuel or Governor Bruce Rauner when they ran for either reelection or election. This is one of the reasons why black Chicago continues to find themselves in the condition that (we) are in. The fact that not one elected official was on hand was really embarrassing... for them. For no alderman, state senator, representative or congressman to not show support for one of their own (Chicagoan) launching a campaign for the highest office of the land is awful. They should be ashamed.

Rather you agree or disagree with Wilson's decision to run, you should at least respect his premise and ambition to address issues pressing the black global community. At least acknowledge your support for his courage and determination to at least get in the game. You can't win the game, if you're not in the game.

This recent announcement is just as symbolic as when now President Barack Obama ran. President Obama was a Harvard graduate, skilled and trained for that moment by some of the best and brightest minds in politics. Obama was expected to compete against the nation's best, but clearly he was not predicted to win. His presidency is special not only because he won (twice), but because of his image around the world. Little black kids, as well as others have had an opportunity to see this massive snapshot of a black man leading the free world. This image is also historic and unforgivable.

Here is what Dr. Wilson stated as he addressed the media: "I'm here today to announce that I am running for president of the greatest country in the world." While surrounded by supporters, Wilson, who said he wants to be the "people's candidate" during Monday's press conference. “This has not been an easy decision for me. But I know that it is the right decision.”

I think it's also the right decision. In this free country, even though some Negroes have not realized mental freedom. Dr. Wilson knows that anyone who works hard, commit and believe in themselves can succeed. Regardless the challenges, the idea that anything is possible, or at least the attempt to make almost anything possible is what America is all about. And he's not asking anyone for money. He's only asking for your support, but mainly your blessings.

Here is what makes this real to me. If you feel that black folks in this country are still relegated to forced segregation, bigotry and racial prejudice. Then you should see Dr. Wilson's desire to let the world know that regardless of the beat down black folks have faced for centuries, he's proof positive that a little black boy from the south with little to no education; and with a serious, but not deterrent speech defeat, that black people can still dream and rise. (See Oprah, Dr. Ben Carson, Tyler Perry, Tom Joiner, Denzel Washington, Jay Z, Little Wayne, Kanye West and so many more).

I see his strategy very clearly: Pundits and potential presidential candidates always talk about the Christian Right or Evangelicals being crucial to any presidential bid. Dr. Wilson is going straight Baptist baby. He want the many, many old school, deep south, back wood Baptists who still believes that they're being excluded from mainstream America, to stand up and show up for one their own.

It's gonna be an interesting narrative. I can't wait to watch Willie go head to head against the likes of Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic forerunner. Her husband (Bill Clinton) the former president, is solely responsible for many of the policies that have shut blacks out and have locked blacks up.

I want the elitist Negroes who are clearly siding with Hillary to ignore or excuse those facts. Willie Wilson plans to bring Bill's record of creating this illusion that he loves black people front and center during any debates against Hillary. This you can be for sure of...
