The Economic Benefits of Closing Educational Achievement Gaps: $2.3 Trillion  Closing racial and ethnic achievement gaps-by raising incomes and increasing the size of the economy-would also have significant positive impacts on federal, state, and local tax revenues.  By Robert Lynch and Patrick Oakford                         November 10, 2014 Our nation is currently experiencing growing levels of income and wealth inequality, which are contributing to longstanding racial and ethnic gaps in education outcomes and other areas. These large gaps, in combination with the significant demographic changes already underway, are threatening the economic future of our country.  Thus, closing racial and ethnic gaps is not only key to fulfilling the potential of people of color; it is also crucial to the well-being of our nation.  Gaps in academic achievement are a function of a host of factors, such as income and wealth inequality, access to child care and preschool programs, nutrition, physical and emotional health, environmental factors, community and family structures, differences in the quality of instruction and school, and educational attainment.  This suggests there are a wide range of public policies that could help narrow educational achievement gaps; this report demonstrates that there are enormous payoffs to closing the gaps through public policies. It also outlines effective public policy strategies to achieve this goal, though their details are left to future research. If the United States were able to close the educational achievement gaps between native-born white children and black and Hispanic children, the U.S. economy would be 5.8 percent-or nearly $2.3 trillion-larger in 2050. The cumulative increase in GDP from 2014 to 2050 would amount to $20.4 trillion, or an average of $551 billion per year. Thus, even very large public investments that close achievement gaps would pay for themselves in the form of economic growth by 2050. Closing racial and ethnic achievement gaps-by raising incomes and increasing the size of the economy-would also have significant positive impacts on federal, state, and local tax revenues.  Therefore, government investments in closing educational achievement gaps that cost less than an average of $198 billion annually over the next 37 years would pay for themselves even in strictly budgetary terms. To put this figure in perspective, consider that the annual cost to implement the Obama administration's high-quality, universal pre-K program averages $7.5 billion per year over the first 10 years. These potential economic gains illustrate in stark terms the massive waste of human talent and opportunity that we risk if achievement gaps are not closed. They also suggest the magnitude of the public investments the nation should be willing to make now and in the decades to come to close achievement gaps. Even from a very narrow budgetary perspective, the tax revenue gains this study forecasts suggest that investments to close racial and ethnic achievement gaps could amply pay for themselves in the long run. Celebrating America's Real Heroes The Illinois Lottery has partnered with TBTNews to present men and women who've served their country. Veterans of the Week will be sponsored by the Lottery and presented each Monday, highlighting veteran's courageous tour of duties and their return to civilian life. The veterans profiled for the next four weeks will tell stories of triumphs, patriotism, love for community and their struggles and successes to regain life after combat. 1). Chicago Army and Hip-Hop Veteran Released Album Dedicated to Fellow Soldiers! Kendale Brinson aka “Doc Illah” served in “Desert Shield /Storm” in 1990-91 as well as “Operation Enduring Freedom” with the Army. In 2002- 03, Doc received a Cross Service Award from the Air Force. Doc served as President of Chicago’s platinum selling artists and producer’s crew “Ill State Assassins”. ISA helped launch the careers of Twista and producer Legendary Traxter. Doc released a project called Lessons in Life. On this album, Doc took time out to recognize those whom he has served honorably with around the world. The first single from the album was I Salute, which was released Veterans Day 2013. 2). Decorated Air Force Colonel Has Three Degrees and Great References…So Why Was He homeless? Robert Freniere has three graduate degrees earned during a 30-year career in the military, which included a position as an aide to Pentagon brass. So it might come as a surprise that he spent time living out of his mini-van. For two years, six hours a day on a computer at the public library, Freniere fills out job applications, with no luck. Freneire joined the Army after the Vietnam War ended and later transferred to the Air Force where he served in several combat zones. Freneire now has a job as a defense contractor. 3). The Government Is Proving That Homelessness Is A Solvable Problem. Since 2010, homelessness among the country’s veterans has fallen 33 percent, and the number of veterans sleeping on the street has fallen nearly 40 percent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) announced the veteran homeless population currently stands at 49,933, which is a reduction of 24,837 people over the past four years. The agencies point to the fact that they have focused on homeless housing before addressing other issues they may face. Starting December 3, he’ll join WSRB FM 106.3, the Crawford Broadcasting urban adult-contemporary station. His show will air from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. For reasons never disclosed, Luv was forced out last July after 14 years at iHeartMedia urban adult-contemporary WVAZ FM 102.7, where he co-hosted “The Real Show with Joe Soto. In a Facebook post a few weeks later, Luv thanked fans for their support, writing: “Everyone will go through something; mine is just magnified.” Luv, whose real name is Ramon Wade, is a 30-year veteran of urban radio in Chicago. A Chicago native and graduate of Columbia College, he began his career as morning show producer for Doug Banks. SPECIAL NOTE: Ramonski has been a committed family man and someone devoted to uplifting his community. Mr. Luv can be seen doing speaking gigs at local schools as well as hosting events that he found served issues near and dear to his heart.
