No Indictment Against Cop Who Killed Michael Brown

As many have expected for weeks, white police officer Darren Wilson, who shot and killed unarmed Black teenager Michael Brown August 9 in Ferguson, Missouri, will not face criminal charges. A grand jury of 9 whites and 3 Blacks decided not to return an indictment against Wilson for firing six shots at Brown, who was initially stopped for jaywalking. After killing Brown, officers allowed his lifeless body to lay in the street for four and a half hours.  Ferguson and St. Louis have been bracing for the reaction to the verdict for weeks now with Missouri Governor Jay Nixon implemented a state of emergency last week in preparation for demonstrations against the non-indictment.

After the grand jury made officials aware they had reached a decision, the entire country was forced to wait for hours for the verdict to be announced. The press conference to announce the decision even started late, and  Nixon indicates that the decision to not announce the verdict until after nightfall was a decision made by prosecutors in the case. President Barack Obama and other officials have called for calm.

Demonstrators in Ferguson have been making preparations including creating shelter and safe spaces at local churches where residents can get food, medical care, and other services. The eyes of the nation and world are on Ferguson, not just because of Brown's death but also because of the violent clashes of police lobbing tear gas and firing rubber bullets at peaceful protestors. The excessive use of force by police against demonstrators and journalists in August caused Amnesty International to deploy a team of human rights observers for the first time in United States history. Amnesty International reports that they will have a team on the ground within 24 hours of the announcement.

Father Clements & George O'Hare Unveiling of Plaque for Harold Washington Library Special Correspondent: Chinta Strausberg After hearing complaints from activists like Josie Child, who heads the Harold Washington Legacy Committee, Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently unveiled a plaque in memory of Mayor Harold Washington that will be prominently placed on the library that was built 23-years ago. In dedicating a plaque in memory of Mayor Washington, Mayor Emanuel said it was long overdue to have a visible name placed on the Harold Washington Library named after the first African American Mayor of Chicago. Many of Mayor Washington’s most loyal soldiers were present like Cook County Clerk David Orr, Rev. B. Herbert Martin, Jane Ramsey, Senator Jacqueline Collins, Aldermen Walter Burnett, Michelle Harris, Jason Irving, Dr.Conrad W. Worrill, Robert Starks, Bennett Johnson, Father George Clements, George O’Hare, Rev. Stan Davis, Henry English, Jacky Grimshaw, Ed Hamb; several of Mayor Washington’s body guards including Wilbourne Woods, Dave M. Rozell; Clarence Jenkins, and many others.

Ald. Harris, Ald. Erving, Ald. Lane, Senator Jacqueline Collins and others attended the unveiling ceremony In addressing the audience, Childs referred to Washington who was known as an avid reader “who used to send the press” scurrying to the dictionary after he spoke. Naming this library after him, she said, “was a perfect setting.” Dr. Worrill said in 1983 when he first met Mayor Washington, he asked the new mayor for an indoor track in Chicago and requested that it be built next to his school. Washington told him, “Conrad, I just got in office. Would you give me a break”? Worrill reminded the audience that he had not “actually been in the mayor’s office since I met with Harold Washington…. I ain’t been fooling with the mayors of Chicago for a long time." Rev. Herbert Martin, Mayor Washington’s pastor, led an inter-active tribute entitled “You Are Remembered.” In ending the ceremony, Martin said, “Bless those who will use this library so they like Harold will be prolific readers, gifted orators, to do justly, love, compassion, serve the common good and find joy in contributing to the progress of this city, the windy city, the city of broad shoulders, the city that works together as we build a new Chicago... our kind of town."

Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET) and The RLJ Companies and Chairman of RLJ Entertainment, announced the launch of UMC – Urban Movie Channel (“UMC”), RLJE’s proprietary digital channel. UMC will feature urban-themed movies as an alternative to conventional subscription-based channels by showcasing the best drama, documentaries, comedies, horror, and stage plays. Commenting on UMC’s launch, Johnson said, “As founder of BET, I have gained a deep understanding and knowledge about the African American and urban consumer and the entertainment content that appeals to them. UMC was designed so that the African American and urban creative community could directly reach consumers in a way that removes many of the restrictions associated with the legacy content development and distribution models. As more video is consumed over broadband, we believe that we can quickly become the preeminent provider of quality urban entertainment to what has largely been an underserved, yet highly engaged audience.” Programs previously released by RLJE under the One Village brand will be incorporated into UMC’s library, which will also include titles from RLJE’s existing Image independent feature film line. UMC will launch with a free trial period for subscribers through February 4, 2015 and with a suggested retail price of $4.99/month or $49.99/year thereafter, but with a special limited time introductory pricing of $2.99/month or $29.99/year to start.
